Wind is the major motor to practice activities such as windsurfing or kitesurfing, even more wind could be responsible for major accidents and hazards associated to practice your favorite activity.
Before practicing windsurfing and kitesurfing we highly recommend that you check your spot forecast and avoid surfing in offshore winds. Several websites are available to check your spot forecast.
A wind has three main characteristics which are: Speed or force, wind rose and directions.
- Wind Speed
Wind speed or wind force is usually measured in Knots, some other measurements are widely used, and to simplify this issue for beginners, in below table a summary on wind speed and its feeling to human eye/body.
|1||0||1||1||Calm||Too Low to practice|
|1-3||1||1-5||1-3||Light Air||Too Low to practice|

- Wind Rose
Wind rose is a graphical tool, widely used by sailors, meteorologists in order to check how typically wind is distributed in a specific location. Wind rose could be used by surfers to check annual wind distribution and speed in a specific area and which season has more powerful wind speed.
- Wind direction
As stated above the 3rd criteria for wind characteristics is its direction.
